On the 4th April Bristol Friends of the Earth, WDM and others held a demonstration to show the importance that aviation is not left out of the climate bill. They were joined by Bristol City Councillors and Stephen Williams, MP. There are a few photos below of the event.

Bristol Friends of the Earth opposes the expansion of Bristol International Airport (BIA) because it is the single largest source of greenhouse gases in the area (producing more carbon dioxide CO2 than all the road transport in Bristol) and is not even good for the economy (due to the damage to the domestic tourism industry).

BIA calculates that the departing flights emit 430,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and plans to grow this to 730,000 tonnes by 2019. Aviation emissions have a larger effect than just the CO2 and this means that BIA currently causes the same damage as about 400,000 cars and plans to grow this by almost 300,000 cars. At a time when we are all thinking about how to cut our impact upon the planet, how can it make sense to allow this to happen?

The tourism deficit due to BIA is around £500 million per year, because it handles far more outbound tourists than inbound ones and its expansion will make this grow to around £1 billion of loss. How can it make sense to allow this to happen?
