Welcome to Bristol Friends of the Earth

Bristol Friends of the Earth is an active local group of the international environmental organisation Friends of the Earth. We currently run campaigns on Bristol airport expansion, local food, local transport and sustainable housing. We hold a monthly group meeting (see right) plus separate campaign meetings.

If you would like to know more about us, to help us by campaigning or raising money, or want to come to a meeting to see what we do then please get in touch. Look further down this page for news, events and actions you can take.

News / Actions POSTCARDS FOR THE PLANET
13th June 2008
Please help us to raise funds for Bristol Friends of the Earth by creating your very own ‘Postcard for the Planet’.
From 29 September to 12 October 2008, BFoE will be holding an exhibition at the Tobacco Factory, Southville, in conjunction with the Green Arts Network and Climate Action Bedminster. We are searching for artists who would like to take this opportunity to showcase their work and support ‘green’ action in the Bristol area, by contributing hand-made postcards for this exciting event.
Our Postcards for the Planet will be sold at the exhibition launch on Tuesday 30 September, and funds raised will be used to support BFoE local campaigns
The postcards will be displayed anonymously, each for sale individually at a fixed price. The price will remain the same no matter who contributed them, whether established artist or small child. Once purchased, the buyer will then be able to discover the details of the artist on the reverse.

Money to burn?
9 September
Sign our anti-incinerator petition here
The West of England Partnership are currently proposing to use PFI to build a 160,000 tonne capacity (or bigger) incinerator in our area - but we now have a good chance to stop them!
The decision to pursue incineration was "called in" by the Liberal Democrats on Bristol City Council, and the Call-in Sub Committee ruled that there had been too little opportunity for debate on the subject, and that the decision was too important to be made by Bristol's Cabinet on their own. Adoption of the residual waste strategy has been referred to the full Council meeting on 9 September, where it can be debated and questioned by ALL councillors. This is our opportunity to stop incineration making an unwelcome return to Bristol.
The price of recyclable materials is rising dramatically - it's even been suggested that it might be economic to "mine" old landfill sites to retrieve buried plastics. If we tie-in to a long term contract to burn our waste, we may lose out on a "green income" for the City, as our valuable recyclables go up in smoke.
