South West Regional Development Plans
Regional planners want to massively increase the population in Bristol: by about 40% by 2026. This growth would require massive house building on the Greenbelt around the city, equivalent to five new Bradley Stokes.
The planners want to build around 92,000 new homes over the next 20 years. Their best estimates are that 60,000 could be built on "brownfield" sites within the existing built-up area. So that leaves over 32,000 to be built in the surrounding countryside, absorbing places like Almondsbury, Winterbourne, Keynsham, Long Ashton and Dundry into the urban sprawl. There are currently around 170,000 homes in Bristol, so an extra 92,000 represents a huge growth in the size of the city.
The Bristol and Bath Friends of the Earth groups are supporting South Gloucestershire Friends of the Earth in their campaign to save the Greenbelt. You can read more about their campaign, and sign the on-line petition at:
